Attested 07 September 1914 at City hall Hull – Medal Index Card entered Egypt 23 December 1915 with 11th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment – Entered Marseilles France 8 March 1916 – Distinguished Conduct Medal awarded while with A Coy 11th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment for an action on 28 June 1918 – London Gazette 30 October 1918 For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. This NCO was acting as company Serjeant-major during our attack. Single-handed he captured five of the enemy who were delaying our advance with machine-gun fire, and, on reaching the final objective, he was of the greatest assistance to the company and platoon commanders in reorganizing the men and consolidating the captured position.
