WAR DIARY
24th May 1915

3am 4th Yorkshire Regiment, 9th Lancers, and 5th Durham Light Infantry were gassed, and report received that Germans had broken through line held by 9th Lancers, ie. on our immediate left and near Hooge, and that parties of them were in Square I. 18. a. No 11 Platoon under 2nd Lieutenant Lavarack sent to North of Zouavre Wood in support of 9th Lancers to take up position covering our left rear.
10am Sent remainder of this Coy (C) to support left of 11th Hussars.
12noon This party was withdrawn and placed in reserve.
1pm A Coy sent to support right of 9th Lancers in left section in fire trench part of which had been taken by the Germans (Square J. 13. a.). The Coy was afterwards withdrawn into the support trenches about 200 yards in rear as there are already too many men in this part of fire trench.
3pm A Coy re-inforced by C Coy (less 1 platoon) and a new trench was dug connecting the support trench with the fire trench. The part of the fire trench partially occupied by the Germans was given up later in the day and our line taken up along this new trench, and continued northwards along what was originally the support trench,
5pm One Squadron of the Dragoon Guards came up to continue this line on the left of C Coy. A Coy on C Coys right.
11pm No 1 Platoon under Lieutenant Laverack returned to battalion headquarters, Casualties 23rd 1 Man wounded 24th 3 men Killed and 21 wounded (including 1 man gassed)
12 midnight Map 28 I. 24. b. 5.8. 2nd Cavalry Division relieved the 1st Cavalry Division and the Battalion came under the orders of the GOC 4th Cavalry Brigade.
