‘B’ & ‘D’ Companies under command of Lieutenant W.E.C. Wigfall and Captain H.C. Rollin respectively each sent two platoons over the parapet, forming first wave of attack. Following on about 50 yards interval the remaining Platoons went over, Battalion Grenadiers on either flank. Each Company took one Lewis Gun. Directly the leading Coys were over the parapets the Germans opened a heavy Machine Gun fire from each flank and shelled heavily with shrapnel and H.E. Our men pushed forward keeping under our Artillery Barrage Capt. Rolling was wounded and Lieut Wigfall wounded in the leg which was broken. The Battalion Bombers entered the German trench on the right and a party of B Coy under CSM Jackson (killed) obtained a footing on the left part of the German Trench where they held on for more than two hours- the battalions on either flank having failed to reach their objective, the remainder of the two Coys then receiving the individual attentions of the Germans, held on in shell holes.
