War Diary
16 November 1916
10.00am. Officers Commanding 4th battalion Yorkshire Regiment and 1/4th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment were required to draw up a scheme for attacking Hook Sap and adjoining trenches, see appendix.
4.15pm. Throughout the day the enemy maintained heavy artillery barrage on front line and Hexam Road, which at about 4.15pm developed into an intense bombardment. The enemy at 0500pm attacked the Gird Line and drove our two Coys out by a combined attack from West (along the trench), North (frontal) and North East (the Australians falling back in face of heavy attack). Remainder of ‘A’ and ‘D’ Companies after heavy casualties held the Support Line behind Gird Line (continuation of the Snag Trench) and returned directly afterwards, relieved by Australians, to Flers Switch. Attack on Hook Sap cancelled by 149 Brigade.
17 November 1916
1.00pm Battalion left the trenches and returned to Camp near High Wood. Total Casualties: – 15th – 16th Inc. 43 wounded, 16 missing, all Other Ranks.
