On the morning of the 8th February 1917 the 7th Green Howard’s on the left of the 7th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, attacked the German trenches on the high ground south-east of Sailly-Saillisel, the object being to capture a section of trench line which ran through the ruins of Saillisel and allowed the enemy observation down the Combles valley. The operation was successful, and although the 7th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment did not actually attack the enemy, both the Battalion posts — Nos. 14 and 15—covered the right of the Green Howard’s and with Lewis-gun fire and rifle grenades broke up an enemy counter-attack, inflicting severe casualties on the Germans as they attempted to bomb the flank of the attacking troops. One officer — 2nd Lieutenant A. W. Vale — was, however, killed in No. 15 Post by a sniper whilst directing the fire of the Lewis gunners. Thirteen other ranks were also killed and 37 wounded.
