Medal Index Card entered France 16 January 1915 – CWGC has death whilst serving with 1st Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment he served with the 2nd Battalion – Killed by shellfire on the afternoon of 4th February 1915 with the 2nd Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment – Lieutenant Oscar James Addyrnan, who was killed in action on 4th February, was born on 19th February, 1891; the second son of the late James Wilson Addyrnan, solicitor Leeds and Harrogate, and of Mrs. St. John Starbeck, Yorkshire. He was gazetted to the 1st Battalion from the Royal Military College on 25th March, 1911, and served at Aldershot and York, transferring the same year to the 2nd Battalion. His promotion as Lieutenant dates from 7th Sept., last Lieut Addyrnan was enjoying a few months leave in England when war was declared and left for India in first week of August, so his stay at Kamptee was a very short one before returning home with the Battalion – War Diary 4th February 1915
In the early morning the Germans attacked trenches to the right and left of D Coy. At about 6am B Coy was attacked on right and driven from right portion of trench losing two Machine Guns.
Later in the day the remainder of B Coy was forced to retire from the remaining portion of the trench, falling back in good order about 80 Yards. No Casualties. Casualties in the early morning retirement: – Killed 8, Wounded 28, Missing 13.
On the same evening an attempt was made to re-take the trench but failed owing to being unable to Locate the enemy in the thick wood.
In the afternoon Captain OC Wilkinson and Lieutenant OJ Addyman were killed by the same shell. Half A and B Coy were relieved on the night of 4 February 1918 by Kings Own Regiment. – Photo and write up
