He served in South africa and at the outbreak of WW1 commanded the 3rd Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment for two years. Had a staff appointment in France and was invalided home just prior to his death. , Suffered nervous breakdown in 1916 , Commited suicide at the Royal Free Hospital London cutting his throut twice with a razor, inquest verdict committed suicide while of unsound mind, Dundee, Perth, Forfar, and Fife s People s Journal 29 December 1917
