Shortly before the War his design for the memorial to Canon Barnett, at the Whitechapel Art Gallery, was selected by the Committee, and he was engaged upon it when War broke out. He at once enlisted in the Royal Engineers, shortly afterwards receiving a Commission in the East Yorkshire Regiment, and was presently appointed Machine, gun Officer of his Battalion. He went out to Gallipoli in July, 1915, and took part in the landing at Suvla Bay on August 7th, and it was there that he met his death on August 22nd, 1915. Age 29. He was gazetted Captain after his death, the appointment to date from August 9th. His Major wrote that in the landing and the three days fighting which followed it, he had “done splendidly.” , Photo
