He joined the 2nd Battalion on their arrival home from India, 13th December. 1888, with the party who had been sent under Captain E. F. Gosset to take over the Barracks in Sheffield the previous August. And served with it in Ireland, and afterwards in the South African War, till he was invalided home with enteric fever from Natal, in March, 1901. 2nd Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment Queens South Africa Medal clasps Wittebergen Cape Colony and Transvaal , He was mentioned in dispatches, and awarded the Medal for Distinguished Conduct in the field.
He also was granted the Medal for Long Service and Good Conduct in 1903.
In 1902, he was appointed Colour Sergeant. Instructor of the Howden Company of the 2nd Volunteer Battalion. Discharged to pension in June, 1907, after 22 years
